Activities

The Culture Centre is currently working towards the development of the following activities:

  • cultural tourism

  • local people making and selling cultural products

  • annual Kutjuwarraku Culture Festival

  • project on coolamons

Cultural tourism

Small scale targeted cultural tourism will be developed over the next three years as a new initiative to support the development of the Culture Centre as a viable social enterprise. This will involve local tour guides showing groups of tourists around local sites and explaining some of the stories and demonstrating their knowledge of country and bush food.

Making and selling cultural products

Warlayirti Artists sees the diversification of the opportunities for local people to engage in income generating activities as an important step that will enable more people to become involved in such activities.  The production of artefacts, beads, baskets and other cultural objects will ensure that the skills and knowledge to produce these items are valued and maintained.

Annual Kutjuwarraku Culture Festival

The annual Kutjuwarraku Culture Centre, which began in 2002, is a regional celebration of culture held in Wirrimanu within the grounds of the Culture Centre. The festival brings together the people of the region to dance, sing and hold workshops to demonstrate their knowledge and teach the younger generations about their rich cultural heritage.

Coolamon project

As part of the Warlayirti Glass Workshop Program, the Culture Centre will work on recording stories and information on the production and use of coolamons by people from the Kutjungka region. This information will form the basis of a book on coolamons that will also incorporate information about the development of the new glass coolamons at Warlayirti Artists.  This publication will be launched in early 2006 with the launch of the glass coolamons.

The commission Warlayirti Artists receives through the sale of glass art is directed to the Culture Centre to support its activities and the development of the Centre as a viable entity.
